Haney told the council the city began discussing downtown parking at the council retreat in March 2024 and subsequently mailed letters to downtown property owners and businesses to explore options. The lot was surveyed in April 2024; easements were obtained and recorded in November 2024 at the Gaston County Register of Deeds. In April 2025 the city received a paving quote from the contractor Custom Paving and the council approved funding the same month.
The existing survey layout, Haney said, showed approximately 67 parking spots under the original arrangement. The proposed new layout "will have approximately a 15 parking spaces," Haney said, adding the change would allow a more structured arrangement to better use the site. Haney said paving is scheduled for June, dependent on weather.
The presentation was informational; council members did not take a formal vote on the item during the meeting. Council members asked whether a motion was needed; the mayor signaled the presentation was for information only. Haney answered follow-up questions from council about the plan and timeline.
Next steps identified in the presentation are completing the contractor scheduling and moving forward with the paving in June if conditions allow. The city did not provide a final construction schedule or contractor start date during the meeting.
