Bryan raises city reimbursement for indigent burials to $1,500 plus $250 marker

The Bryan City Council approved an amendment to section 9.57.07 of the city codified ordinances to increase the maximum reimbursement for indigent burial expenses to $1,500 for the cremation/service and an additional $250 for a marker.
Clerk/Treasurer John told council that the last local adjustment to the section dated to 2003 and that funeral homes in neighboring communities have raised their reimbursement amounts to about $1,500. He said funeral directors reported that previous local payments did not come close to covering costs.
John also said the State of Ohio had suspended a reimbursement program in prior years but had recently reestablished funding that could reimburse municipalities up to $1,000 per burial; that state funding, he said, should partially offset the city’s expense. Council indicated the increase was intended to better cover funeral costs for indigent residents; officials estimated the city handles roughly four to eight such burials per year.
The ordinance passed after suspension of the rules and a roll call vote in favor.
