East Kingston board approves updated student-focused policies and withdraws older versions

The East Kingston School District board voted to adopt a set of reworded, student-focused policies and to withdraw older versions that the policy committee reworked.
A board member said the policies were updated to reflect recent federal legal changes and that legal counsel, district nurses and the policy committee reviewed the language. The new or revised policies listed during the meeting included IHBAC (developmentally delayed as a qualifying disability), JFABD (education of unhoused students and unaccompanied youth), JICDD (student discipline; out-of-school action), JLCA (physical examinations of students), JLCH (do not resuscitate orders), JLF (reporting child abuse), and JLP (parental notification and involvement in student welfare). Older policies identified for withdrawal included IHBDA, JFABDR1, JFAC, JKB, JKD and JKE as listed by the board.
A motion to adopt the reworked policies was moved and seconded and passed with an affirmative vote. The board subsequently moved and seconded to withdraw the older policy documents; that motion also passed with all in favor. Board members said the changes were intended to align district policy with incoming federal law and noted the policy committee used multiple reviewers, including nurses and legal counsel, in drafting the new language.
