District to receive HESI grant; Native American student identification up to 73

The Vermillion School District told the board on May 12 it expects to be awarded a HESI grant for roughly $16,675 and will continue partnering with USD to support Native American students and programming.
A presenter said the award amount is about $16,675, up roughly $2,300 from the prior award, and "that able, gave us the ability to raise the salary to 14,371." The board packet shows the grant funds are earmarked for staffing, student consumables and student-related activities; specific line items mentioned included $1,000 for drummers, $500 for student consumables and $500 for professional development, with other needs to be addressed through USD partnership.
The presenter said efforts to improve identification of Native American students increased counts from 65 to 73 after work in the fall, but noted the district is still short of identifying all who may be eligible. Staff credited outreach, including messages that include some indigenous language, with encouraging participation.
The presenter also noted Paisley (no last name given) will continue work through next school year but will leave in December for graduate school in Minnesota. Graduation was announced for May 14 from 4 to 5 p.m. at Prentice Park.
