The Louisiana Senate Judiciary B Committee reported House Bill 23 favorably on Tuesday. The bill would require sentencing documents to be submitted electronically by law enforcement to the Department of Corrections and authorize the department to promulgate implementing rules.
Senator Harris, presenting the bill, said the measure could speed up the process by replacing paper filings with electronic transmission and also requires clerks of court to send documents electronically where possible. Committee members adopted a set of technical amendments (16-22) offered by the sponsor; there was no objection to reporting the bill favorably.
Sponsors and committee members described the change as a procedural modernization designed to speed processing of sentencing paperwork; no fiscal figures or implementation costs were discussed in committee testimony.
