School district to issue RFP for radon mitigation at three schools after tests show elevated levels

The Teton County School District board approved issuing a request for proposals to mitigate radon at three school buildings after recent testing showed radon concentrations above the district’s action threshold.
District staff said tests conducted in March 2025 largely mirrored earlier measurements and that Driggs Elementary, Rendezvous Elementary and Teton Middle School had readings above 4.0 picocuries per liter (pCi/L). A district work group including a radon expert, maintenance staff and community representatives recommended moving forward with mitigation RFPs for those three buildings.
Staff told the board the RFP will require contractors to hold the NRBP certification referenced in the packet and the appropriate licensing to work on large buildings and schools (not just residential certificates). The RFP will include a mandatory site visit so bidders can review building plans and scope the systems they propose and must include follow‑up post‑installation testing to verify the mitigation’s effectiveness.
District staff estimated the project will be “north of $100,000” for the three schools combined but said the district will use school modernization funds to pay for work as appropriate. Board members asked whether final payment could be held contingent on verified post‑installation test results; staff said that provision could be included in the bid package for board consideration when bids are received.
A trustee moved and the board voted to authorize issuing the radon mitigation RFP to a short list of contractors with the required certification. Staff said the district will notify the six contractors identified in the packet and will require them to attend the mandatory site visit. The work group also recommended future retesting for the high school after its new HVAC system is in place to determine whether separate mitigation is required at that campus.
