Board awards bid to Construction Specialists for music room renovations at Converse and Burns

The facilities presenter told trustees he had confirmed scope understanding with the architect and the apparent low bidder. "I verified through the architect... that they understand exactly a dollar," the staff member said.
The board discussed alternates included with the base bid: one alternate for installing carpet base protection for construction traffic and a second alternate to remove existing wall panels, refinish the drywall and install new acoustic paneling. Facilities staff recommended acceptance of the base bid plus both alternates and proposed a construction timeline to begin after graduation and finish by Aug. 8, with liquidated damages if the contractor misses the deadline.
A motion to award the base bid and both alternates to Construction Specialists Incorporated passed (motion: Julianne; second: Matt). District staff said the renovated rooms will address long-standing acoustical and finish issues and will make the rooms ready for fall activities.
Trustees asked whether the architect had provided an independent estimate; staff said an architect estimate was not available or not provided for comparison at the time of the award.
The successful bidder will be expected to meet the board’s timeline and coordinate final scope details with district facilities and the architect.
