LAWRENCE COUNTY, Pa. — The Lawrence County Board of Commissioners voted May 13 to authorize a county application for a $250,000 grant from the Commonwealth Financing Authority’s Greenways, Trails and Recreation Program (GTRP) to help complete phase 2 of a multi-jurisdictional trail rehabilitation project.
Planning Director Amy Kenny told commissioners the full trail project exceeds $700,000 in estimated cost; the county previously received $100,000 from the Local Share Account and has applied to other sources. The GTRP application seeks $250,000; county staff said the program requires a 15% local match, which the county planning department will supply from existing grants funds if the CFA award is made.
Kenny said the trail runs through parts of Union Township and Mahoning Township and continues toward the Ohio state line. Commissioners noted the trail attracts out-of-county cyclists who contribute to local businesses and tourism.
The board approved committing the 15% match contingent on receipt of the GTRP award. Commissioners and staff thanked county engineer Bill Humphrey and local partner Lori Lawrence for assisting with the application.
The motion to authorize the application and the matching commitment passed by roll call. County staff said they will return if the grant is awarded with further details on project scheduling and procurement.
