CRA Approves $101,297 Commercial Grant to RIFT Fitness for Building Upgrades

The Clearwater Community Redevelopment Agency on May 12 unanimously approved a commercial grant to Vital Life Fitness LLC, doing business as RIFT Fitness, to fund interior and exterior improvements at 1280 Court Street.
Julie Baltus, CRA specialist, told trustees the total scope of improvements is estimated at $184,177.57. The applicant will provide a 45% match (about $82,879.91); staff recommended a grant not to exceed $101,297.66. Projects described include plumbing and electrical upgrades, new windows and doors, signage and HVAC replacement.
Business owner Ben Gilbert addressed trustees and described his local roots and expansion plans: “I poured my heart and soul into the city to create something that I feel is truly special,” he said, adding he hopes to host free outdoor events and community seminars from improved facilities.
The trustees approved the staff recommendation by unanimous consent. Trustees and staff said the improvements align with CRA goals to bolster downtown services and commercial activity.
What the CRA approved: A commercial improvement grant not to exceed $101,297.66 with the owner contributing approximately 45% of project costs. The CRA will execute grant documents and monitor completion per CRA program rules.
Next steps: Staff will finalize grant paperwork, confirm matching funds and monitor construction and permit compliance. The owner said he plans to use improved exterior space for free community events and seminars aimed at increasing downtown activity.
