The Town of Lake Clarke Shores council completed its annual reorganization and took several administrative votes on April 8, as residents filled the meeting to press for stronger enforcement of reckless watercraft on the C‑51 Canal.
Reorganization vote and new leadership
Councilors nominated and voted for the mayor, vice mayor and president pro tem. On separate voice votes the council selected Bridget Keating as mayor (winning by a 3–2 vote), Christie Mosbach as vice mayor and Taylor Meteo as president pro tem. The council administered the oath of office to newly seated members before proceeding with business.
Bridge lighting: council favors downlighting, 3–2
Councilors discussed several lighting options for the new Pine Tree Bridge and voted 3–2 in favor of a downlighting fixture (a shepherd’s‑crook style) rather than the acorn fixtures used on other town bridges. Staff said the town has budgeted approximately $60,000 for the lights (about $30,000 per side pair) and will match fixture finish to the bridge railing; the council asked staff to return with alternate downlighting designs and cost details before ordering and installation.
Garbage collection: manager authorized to negotiate with WM
The council discussed options for municipal waste collection — contracting with another municipality, creating a town-run service (not recommended by staff for scale reasons), issuing a public request for proposals (RFP) or negotiating directly with the incumbent WM (formerly Waste Management). Council voted to authorize the town manager to negotiate a contract with WM and return to council with recommended terms.
Parking on grass draft ordinance
Council discussed a draft ordinance that would prohibit parking on front lawns except in two limited cases: (1) during social events and (2) when a driveway is temporarily out of service due to repair or resurfacing. The item was presented as first reading; staff said changes can still be made before a required second reading at the May meeting.
Other business and staff reports
- Staff reported progress on Pine Tree Bridge construction and that debris found under the bridge footprint will require a change order; decorative lighting fixtures were discussed separately in the lighting vote. - Staff listed upcoming town events, routine operational updates and outreach activities including a lake/land cleanup and planned summer programs. - Police and fire chiefs reported on response times and operations; police reported 93 dispatches during the previous month and 3 arrests.
Votes at a glance
- Bridget Keating elected mayor — outcome: approved, vote 3–2. - Christie Mosbach elected vice mayor — outcome: approved (voice vote). - Taylor Meteo elected president pro tem — outcome: approved (voice vote). - Motion to select shepherd’s‑crook downlighting fixture for Pine Tree Bridge — outcome: approved, vote 3–2; staff directed to return with additional downlighting style options and costs. - Motion authorizing the town manager to negotiate a contract with WM for commercial garbage collection — outcome: approved. - Motion to approve agenda and consent agenda — outcome: approved (voice votes).
Ending note
