Taos Municipal Schools board tables superintendent evaluation, schedules May 28 vote

The Taos Municipal Schools Board on an evening meeting exited a lengthy executive session and voted to table final approval of the 2024–25 superintendent evaluation until a special meeting at 5 p.m. on May 28 in the superintendent’s office.

President Flores said the board entered executive session at 3:16 p.m. “to discuss limited personnel matters,” citing the exception in Section 10-15-1(H)(2) of the New Mexico Open Meetings Act and adding that “no other items were discussed for the record.” The board returned to open session at about 8:25 p.m.

A motion to exit executive session was made, seconded, and approved by roll call: Board member Pontchart, Board member King, Secretary Trujillo, Vice President Sprague and President Flores all voted yes. Later, under new business (item 8.1), the board moved to table approval of the superintendent’s evaluation and set May 28 at 5 p.m. in the superintendent’s office to finalize and approve it; the motion was seconded and carried on the same roll-call votes.

Board members also noted a regular board meeting scheduled for May 21, 2025, at 6 p.m. at Taos High School and confirmed the May 28 follow-up meeting to complete the evaluation. A speaker present said the evaluation was “just about complete” and that the May 28 meeting should allow finalization.

Because the discussion and evaluation occurred in executive session under the limited-personnel exemption of the Open Meetings Act, the board did not disclose substantive evaluation details in open session. The board instructed that any items members want on the upcoming agenda be communicated to the president and the superintendent so they can be placed on the May 21 agenda.

The board adjourned shortly after completing the scheduling actions.
