Council amends wording and postpones review of Jupiter lithium battery host agreement request

Councilors expressed concern about the safety, land use and long‑term benefits of large battery storage facilities. Councilor Matuski urged caution and said the 25‑acre site under consideration should be used for other economic development if possible. Councilors also discussed the potential for a public safety building and whether the project would deliver significant local jobs once construction is complete.
After discussion, a motion to amend the resolution changed the text to request any proposed host agreement or PILOT (payment in lieu of taxes) include explicit reference to “lithium battery storage” rather than a generic “battery.” The amendment passed by voice vote.
The council then voted to postpone the item to the next meeting to allow sponsors and administration to supply written materials and to provide answers to council questions. The council also instructed sponsors to provide any proposed pilot or host agreements and to clarify potential public‑safety mitigation, local job creation, land use and alternatives for the site.
