The Everett City Council approved a $500,000 appropriation from the capital improvement stabilization fund to pay for design services and related costs associated with potential reuse of additional space at the former Everett High School.
Councilors said the money will pay architects and ancillary costs to produce plans that the city can use to assess options for creating classroom space, child care and other uses that could relieve overcrowding in the district. Councilor Smith said earlier questions about whether $2.5 million previously earmarked for the high school could be reallocated had been answered: the city may reallocate the $2.5 million to other categories but ARPA rules limit use for certain education items.
Councilor VanCampen said he supported the appropriation and noted the council had previously asked administration to reuse the building to provide classroom space for students learning in hallways and other overflow spaces. Councilors emphasized that design is a necessary step before seeking larger construction funding. The council voted in favor by roll call; the clerk recorded 10 yeas and 0 nays.
Administration officials said community members and councilors can be included on a design committee. The appropriation funds the production of architectural drawings and related work so that the council and public will have concrete options and costs before any construction appropriation is requested.
