The Everett City Committee on Ways and Means voted unanimously Monday to refer back to the sponsor a resolution asking the committee to consider local implementation of the HERO Actand potential expanded veteran tax exemptions.
Committee Chair Yellen said the resolution requested discussion of "the HERO Act, specifically the increased local flexibility for veteran tax exemptions," and noted the Board of Assessors had already passed the change at its last meeting. Councilor DePipero said he was "more looking for information on the implementation," asking whether the city would run public-service announcements or whether the city maintained a list of potentially eligible veterans through Veterans Affairs.
The committee had no Board of Assessors representative present and no additional implementation details were available. Chair Yellen recommended referring the item back to the sponsor so staff could gather the information. A motion to refer back to the sponsor was made, seconded and approved without recorded opposition.
The referral means the committee will not take further action until the sponsor and staff provide follow-up information about how the exemption changes would be implemented and communicated to eligible veterans.
Action on the HERO Act resolution will return to committee or council once staff have provided the requested implementation details.
