Council approves $80,000 contract to replace median irrigation and landscaping on major Mason arterials

The Mason City Council on May 12 authorized the city manager to contract with VanderWyst of Cincinnati Inc. for median irrigation and landscaping replacement, in an amount of $80,000.
Public works staff said many median irrigation systems are over 20 years old and have ongoing maintenance issues such as broken sprinkler heads and controllers that spray motorists’ vehicles. The 2025 budget had $125,000 allocated for median renovation; the $80,000 contract covers replacement work focused on the Western Row Road medians east of Tylersville Road and Mesa Montgomery Road between Lexington Park and Financial Way.
Staff described features of the replacement system that will reduce maintenance and water waste: a flow-valve monitor that alerts staff to unscheduled flow and more sophisticated weather/forecast integration to prevent watering during rain events. The vendor, VanderWyst, has performed similar median work for the city previously and staff said the company minimizes damage to existing landscaping during work.
Council voted to adopt the ordinance and staff said procurement and installation will proceed; the new systems are intended to reduce irrigation failures and unintended spray onto vehicles and adjacent sidewalks.
