The Otsego City Council on Jan. 13 appointed Council Member Tina as acting mayor, approved council and commission assignments for 2025, and scheduled advisory commission interviews and orientation sessions, the council said.
Council action set advisory commission interviews for Feb. 13 at 5:30 p.m., authorized a special council orientation and training session for Feb. 26 at 5:30 p.m., and called an Economic Development Authority meeting for Feb. 10 at 6 p.m. The council also approved its routine agenda and consent items for the evening. All motions passed on voice votes.
Why it matters: the votes establish leadership and committee memberships for the year, set the schedule for recruiting and interviewing advisory-commission candidates, and schedule training for newly sworn-in members, which affects how quickly the new council can begin substantive policy work.
Most important votes and scheduling details - Tina was appointed acting mayor by motion of Mayor Jessica Stockamp, seconded by Council Member Michelle DuSalle; the motion carried on a voice vote. - The council approved its 2025 committee and commission assignments (planning commission liaison, parks and recreation, public safety, public works subcommittee, administrative assignments and alternates). Staff said the Otsego Creek Authority has not met in some time; the council will appoint if needed. - Advisory commission interviews were scheduled for Feb. 13, beginning at 5:30 p.m.; staff said there are 13 applicants this year and noted past counts (14 applicants last year, 12 the year before). Staff said they generally allow about 15 minutes per interview. - A special orientation and training session for the council was set for Feb. 26 at 5:30 p.m.; the city will send a doodle poll to refine dates and times as needed. - The Economic Development Authority meeting was set for Feb. 10 at 6:00 p.m.
Council procedure and next steps Council members asked staff to circulate schedules and any background materials in advance of the interviews and training. City staff (city clerk and administrator) will manage logistics and notify council members of exact times and locations. The council also asked staff to prepare appointment paperwork and to follow up on any changes to committee meeting cadences noted during the meeting.
Quotes and attributions - "I move to approve the agenda as written," said Council Member Ryan when offering the motion to adopt the night’s agenda; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote.
What was discussed but not decided During reports a council member urged the city to draft a transparent ordinance to address how the council would fill a vacancy if one occurs; council members asked staff to prepare options for a process and legal considerations so the council can consider a formal ordinance in a future meeting.
The council adjourned after completing items of business and will reconvene for the scheduled meetings and interviews in February.
