The City of Otsego City Council recognized Avery Harala, a fourth-grade student at Otsego Elementary School, as one of four statewide winners in the League of Minnesota Cities "Mayor for a Day" essay contest. The council noted there were 852 submissions this year and that the program began in 2013.
"I wrote about parks and recreation because I thought parks are really fun for kids to play on and be safe," Avery told the council when invited to describe her essay. Council members said Avery had been invited to attend the city's Park and Recreation Commission meeting because her essay proposed more trails, additional parks and public restrooms, and mentioned sanitation to keep play areas healthy.
The mayor said Avery visited city hall earlier, sat in the mayor's chair and posed for photos. The council presented Avery with a certificate and applauded her during the March 10 meeting.
Council members asked that staff or council liaisons introduce Avery at the Park and Recreation Commission meeting if she is able to attend. No council action or policy change concerning parks was taken at the March 10 meeting; the item was a ceremonial recognition.
