County will continue Consumers Energy demand response program participation in summers 2026 and 2027

The Muskegon County Public Works Board on May 1 approved the Resource Recovery Center’s continued participation in Consumers Energy’s demand response program for summers 2026 and 2027 and authorized the board chair to sign the program agreement.
A staff member explained the county has participated in the program since February 2017 and described the program’s incentives. “We've been doing the consumer's energy demand response program since 02/2017, and we've enjoyed it very much. It's, we get an a nice incentive. First year, they actually cut us a check for it, but the years after that, they just get it as a give it as a credit on our electric bill,” the staff member said. The staff member described the operational element: during an emergency the center reduces electricity use by shutting off equipment such as air blowers and pumps to meet an agreed reduction and receive payment or bill credit.
When asked whether the county had to curtail previously, the staff member said the first year had multiple events and later years had only about one event. The board recorded the motion and completed a vote to continue participation.
The meeting record does not quantify the expected incentive payments for future years or identify any material cost or operational changes tied to participation.
