Willmar Council names Michael Holm police chief in 8-0 vote

City Administrator Leslie Valiant recommended Holm to the council, saying, “my recommendation tonight is interim police chief Michael Holm for the position of the Willmar Police Department.” The council then moved and seconded the recommendation and approved it by roll call.
Voters on the council and staff noted Holm’s long tenure in the department. Valiant told the council Holm has served with the department since May and has worked in patrol, the gang unit, as a detective and patrol sergeant, and as interim chief. Councilmembers also thanked the other finalists. Councilmember Scholz said he had “the privilege of sitting in on all the interviews” and praised the strength of internal candidates.
In discussion following the appointment, at least one councilmember asked staff to prepare a written policy about using consulting firms for future department-director recruitment to reduce delays. Valiant replied the city would bring a proposal back for council consideration.
The appointment was approved by roll call: 8 ayes, 0 nays. The council’s action was limited to the appointment; no ancillary personnel details or contract terms were disclosed at the meeting.
