Grosse Ile Conservancy highlights Earth Week programs, seeks volunteers for Sunrise Park cleanup and Island Fest

The Grosse Ile Nature & Land Conservancy reported on Earth Week activities, school engagement and a slate of upcoming volunteer events at the Greenways Open Space Committee meeting.

Conservancy representative Mandy told the committee that educators and students from local schools participated in campus cleanups and that Dr. Julia Roscoe led well‑attended nature walks. The Conservancy hosted an Earth Day presentation that included a video from Priority Waste explaining recycling and curbside collection rules, and a high‑school environmental‑club presentation on microplastics in water.

Mandy asked the committee to publicize volunteer opportunities. Upcoming events noted at the meeting include a Sunrise Park cleanup on Saturday, May 17 at 9 a.m.; a program on ruby‑throated hummingbirds on Tuesday, May 20 (evening program); and Island Fest, May 30–June 1, where the Conservancy will staff a booth and seeks volunteers to help with setup, staffing and take‑down. Mandy also praised volunteers who restored the garden in front of the Jackson Resource Center and thanked Dr. Roscoe and student presenters for their work with youth education. The committee discussed whether the Conservancy’s events could be promoted through the committee’s fledgling Instagram account; committee members said a communications plan will be presented at the next meeting to coordinate posts and avoid duplicative messaging.

Committee members said they will work with the Conservancy to publicize the Sunrise Park cleanup and Island Fest volunteer opportunities to increase turnout.
