The Grosse Ile Greenways Open Space Committee received a financial update showing the committee's working balance at roughly $159,403 after a recent land acquisition deducted about $144,000 from last year’s totals.
Committee staff and members explained the accounting: a property‑acquisition fund contains roughly $20,000; the maintenance/operations fund is the remainder. The committee’s approved operating budget for the fiscal year is $40,500, and finance projects about $5,000 in interest income for the year. For April, the committee recorded expenditures of $1,096.53 — about 2.7% of the annual budget to date.
Invoices presented at the meeting included $512.10 for open‑space signs (a quantity discount yielded 20 signs), $432.18 for PVC piping and related materials used by Department of Public Services crews during Meridian Woods drainage work, and a $152.25 reimbursement for posts and hardware purchased for sign installation; the reimbursement has been paid. Committee members said they will continue to request clearer monthly reporting via the township's ClearGov system and may invite the finance manager to present once the improved reporting is available.
Committee members also noted that open‑space millage revenues have not been collected annually since 2002 and that the fund balance represents accumulated, finite resources. The group discussed prioritizing projects to extend the fund's impact while monitoring interest and investment returns.
No budget amendments were approved at the meeting; staff will provide updated monthly reports as ClearGov reporting is implemented.
