Assistant Director Ash told the commission May 1 that interviews for seasonal staff are nearly finished, camp counselor roles are filled, and the department expects the public pool's main opening to be June 16, with a contractor scheduled to begin pool work on June 2.
"We have just about finished interviews. I might be hiring at least 1 more swim instructor, but, otherwise, camp counselors have been hired," Ash said, describing staff orientation plans and a possible earlier opening if enough staff (particularly returning college‑age employees) are available. Ash noted that opening earlier would mean shorter daily hours initially if staff numbers are limited.
The commission discussed related dates: an end‑of‑year school party for students is planned for June 12, and the contractor start date for pool setup and opening work is June 2. Ash said the department will hold staff orientation before opening and continue recruitment to ensure lifeguard and instructor coverage. No formal vote was required; this was an operational update.
The commission asked staff to continue recruiting and to provide final public hours once staffing and contractor timelines are confirmed. The department will notify residents about the pool opening date and any weekday schedule adjustments.
