Selma approves $250 sponsorship for local cycling club’s MS fundraiser

The Selma Town Council on May 8 approved a $250 sponsorship for the Selma Cyclopaths (a town cycling club) to support the group’s fundraising ride for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Janet Ruby, captain of the Selma Cyclopaths, told the council the team began about 30 years ago to raise funds for MS and continues to include riders who live with the disease. Ruby said the team rides weekly from Thanksgiving Elementary School in Selma and offers routes of approximately 10, 30 and 60 miles to accommodate different abilities. She said the club promotes healthy living and community pride and that members wear jerseys bearing the town name.

Council discussion: Council members noted the town had sponsored the club with $250 in recent years and asked whether the current budget could accommodate another $250 sponsorship this year. Staff and council members indicated the $250 sponsorship is discretionary and that the council had room in the government line for the current year’s donation.

Action taken: A council member moved, another seconded, and the council approved a $250 sponsorship for the Selma Cyclopaths to support the club’s fundraising ride this year.

Ending: Club captains thanked the council; staff will process the sponsorship from the current fiscal-year budget line.
