The Medina City Council on May 12 approved a three-year lease agreement with the Medina Metropolitan Housing Authority to renovate and use the city’s municipal-court building at 135 North Elmwood Ave. once the court relocates.
Mayor Hamill, explaining the negotiated terms, said the lease will allow the housing authority to occupy the building after the municipal court moves to the square (projected in spring 2026) and that the city will continue to use the basement for storage. Hamill said the city currently pays about $2,000 per month—roughly $24,000 per year—to maintain the building; leasing it avoids that maintenance burden while allowing the housing authority to provide services closer to constituents in the northwest sector of the city.
Hamill said putting the housing authority office in close proximity to City Hall benefits residents who rely on its services and who may lack driver’s licenses. Council approved Ordinance 92-25 by roll call vote 7-0.
The ordinance authorizes the mayor to enter the lease and permits the city to retain storage use of the basement. Mayor Hamill said the arrangement is intended to save the city maintenance costs while keeping services accessible to the housing authority’s client base. The council record shows unanimous approval and no amendments recorded at the meeting.
