Board moves facility-naming and commercial-advertising policies to final adoption; AI-use policy nears first read

During its May 12 meeting the Central York School District Board of School Directors confirmed that Policy 701.1 (facilities naming) and Policy 913.1 (commercial advertising in schools) will proceed to final adoption at the board’s June 9 meeting following a second reading. Director Walker, who discussed the committee’s revisions, offered to answer questions about the changes made in committee.

“I'm happy to answer any about anything that we added or discussed in committee,” Walker said during the discussion of the second readings. The board recorded no substantive objections and advanced both policies to final adoption at the next regular meeting.

Separately, the board’s policy committee reported active work on an artificial-intelligence policy, Policy 815.1. Director Walker said the committee is “about 95% of the way” toward a draft ready for first reading, with remaining work focused on how teachers will notify students about permissible AI use on assignments and the scale for permitted AI assistance. The committee also received an update on implementation of Policy 353 (whistleblower policy) and deferred a scheduled review of Policy 249 (bullying and cyberbullying) to a future session.

The policy committee’s approach emphasizes providing teachers with tools to set assignment-level expectations for AI use and notifying students about permitted uses ahead of assignments. The board did not vote on the AI policy at the May 12 meeting; staff and the committee will finalize edits before bringing the item forward for first read.
