Summary
A resident told council May 12 that proposed sidewalks reported in local media would not extend into some residential neighborhoods; council members and staff clarified the focus streets and said the city will proceed only on the streets identified as safety priorities.
WICKLIFFE, Ohio — A resident pressed the Wickliffe City Council on May 12 about a published list of streets recommended for new sidewalks, and council members clarified which blocks are being considered.
Jeff Tershon of 30518 Bridle Path Trail said a May 10 News Herald article listed six or seven streets for sidewalks and asked whether the plan had been narrowed. "I believe council president Levon limited that search to Cavan, Clark, and Johnson," he said during the public comment period, and asked that the council leave other neighborhood streets alone.
Engineer Formica responded that the focus was on streets with curves and pedestrian safety concerns; the committee and staff have proposed sidewalks on Camden, Clark and Johnson because of higher pedestrian traffic and roadway geometry. Council members and staff told Tershon the streets the committee identified "will be touched with sidewalks."
Later in the meeting Councilman Garretts said he had received calls from residents on Johnson and Clark who oppose sidewalks in their area; he relayed those concerns to the council. The council also reminded residents of a public hearing on the rezoning of the old school property scheduled for 7 p.m. May 14 at the senior community center.
The council did not adopt a final sidewalk project at the May 12 meeting and did not vote on funding; staff said details about the streets under consideration and next steps would be clarified in committee and future hearings.
