Young County Commissioners Court ratified a resolution authorizing the Young County Sheriff's Office to apply for a Motor Vehicle Crime Prevention Authority (MVCPA) grant to fund cameras and other theft-prevention measures aimed at catalytic-converter theft.
The resolution, signed by the county judge before the court met because of an application deadline, designates Lieutenant William Kaufman as the authorized official to apply for and accept the MVCPA grant and names the county auditor as the financial officer for the grant if awarded.
At the meeting the judge explained the urgency: "I didn't feel like I could wait till commissioners court because we had a deadline on applying for the grant." The judge said the department is exploring partnerships with the cities of Albany and Graham and that Will, the county's grant writer, would run any final documents by the court. The judge also read the resolution's statutory basis aloud, citing "the Texas Transportation Code chapter 1,006 and the Texas Administrative Code title 43 part 3 chapter 57" during the reading.
Sheriff's office and county staff described the camera systems under consideration and said neighboring counties using similar systems reported both strong investigative results and installation backlogs; the judge relayed feedback from other counties that implementation can lag because demand has outpaced installers. No dollar amounts or vendor contracts were finalized in the meeting; the judge said detailed cost breakdowns presented earlier had not been delivered to the county yet.
The court motioned and seconded ratification in open session; the judge asked for "forgiveness" for signing the resolution earlier because of the grant deadline and the court approved the ratification. Commissioners said they support pursuing the grant but noted they had not yet received firm numbers from potential camera providers or confirmed partnership agreements with nearby cities.
