Dr. Jason Perez told the board that a district naming committee reviewed submitted suggestions and recommended three names, in order of preference, for the new middle school.
Perez said staff, students and Deer Creek patrons were notified of the committee opportunity in March; about 100 people applied to serve. In accordance with board policy, the superintendent selected 10 district employees, 10 patrons and 10 high-school students to make a 30-person committee.
After community solicitation for name suggestions, Perez said 60 names were submitted for committee consideration. The committee met April 16; 19 committee members attended that meeting. Perez reported that the committee narrowed the list to three recommendations, in this order: Central Creek Middle School, Bluff Creek Middle School and Buckland.
Perez said Central Creek was recommended in part because the school site is centrally located in the district and Bluff Creek recognizes a local geographic feature. He said the student-proposed name Buckland was included as a third choice, noting it referenced the Deer Creek antlers mascot.
Perez told the board the three recommended names will be presented for the board's vote at the next regular meeting in June.
No board vote occurred at this meeting; the item is scheduled for a future meeting.
