Superintendent Deb Hauser told the board that Middletown City Schools faces a possible federal clawback of ARP/ESSER funds and that the district is actively seeking support from federal and state lawmakers to retain the remaining aid.
“We still have about, just under $6,000,000 outstanding,” Hauser said, describing the district’s remaining ARP/ESSER balance as at risk of being clawed back by the U.S. Department of Education. She said the district submitted an application to retain the funds and has solicited letters of support from elected officials.
Hauser said Ohio state Senator Lang sent a letter of support to the Education Department and that Representative Thomas Hall and U.S. Representative Warren Davidson also provided letters. She said staff were attempting to reach the offices of U.S. Senators (named in the discussion as Senator Marino and Senator J.D. Vance’s associated senator “Houston”) and that Sen. Houston’s office had responded the day of the meeting. Hauser noted the district is midway through a project funded in part by those dollars and described the outreach as necessary to complete the work.
