Deer Creek superintendent highlights staff appreciation, Seal of Biliteracy and student honors

Deer Creek Public Schools Superintendent Jason Perez told the Board of Education that the district recently celebrated teachers and staff during Teacher Appreciation Week and recognized a number of student and staff achievements.
Perez said community PTOs, partners and families provided meals, gifts and incentives during the appreciation events, and noted that Deer Creek Academy will graduate 30 seniors this year, its largest graduating class to date.
The superintendent also recognized staff achievements. “Congratulations to Christy Van Dorn, our assistant superintendent of supervision instruction, for being named the OASA Area 7 Assistant Superintendent of the Year,” Perez said. He added that Van Dorn was not present at the meeting.
At the same meeting, Paloma Cortez Goodwin and Principal Ashley Mackey presented the Oklahoma Seal of Biliteracy to a group of high school students who demonstrated proficiency in English and another language. Cortez Goodwin described the award and read the names of students receiving the seal; she said the distinction is recognized in more than 40 states and “highlights the value of multilingualism in today's interconnected world.”
The board also heard from staff about the Teacher Technology Academy, a year-long program in which teachers meet monthly to develop classroom technology practices. A presenter described the academy as focused on instructional design rather than specific devices and listed participating teachers who completed the program this year.
The superintendent closed his report by noting upcoming last days of school and congratulating students who received nominations and all-district or all-state athletic honors.
Board members took no separate action during the superintendent’s report segment; the items presented were informational.
