Council approves alley gate at Toll subdivision after residents report assaults and high‑speed traffic

The Mission City Council approved a resolution (19‑86) allowing placement of a gate in the alley adjacent to the Aguilarza Mid Market after multiple residents reported safety problems, including one resident’s account of an assault that left him hospitalized.
Several neighbors spoke during the public hearing. A resident who identified himself as the adjacent property owner said the alley had been used as a high‑speed cut‑through “day and night” and described a November assault that left him with fractures and extended time out of work. Sarah Segredo Hammond, an adjacent property owner, told the council she supported sealing and gating the alley. Neighbor Gabriel Reyna said drivers “don't care” and routinely speed through the alley, sometimes exceeding 30 mph.
Staff said they had accepted complaints and scheduled a public hearing; the council moved to approve the resolution authorizing the gate and voted unanimously. Council directed staff to implement the gate per the conditions in the resolution and to monitor any reported access or public‑safety issues after installation.
