Douglas County superintendent seeks expedited HVAC purchase to meet fall installation deadline

Superintendent Dr. Trent North told the Douglas County Board of Education on May 5 that the district will seek board approval at its next meeting to purchase heating, ventilation and air-conditioning units needed for schools before the fall semester.
"We would like to put it on the agenda for next, to be voted on next, next meeting," Dr. Trent North said, urging the board to approve using the state bid process to avoid delays. "If we use the state bid, we can go ahead and order and have it ready. But if we go through the judicial process, it would take us about 90 to 60, 60 to 90 additional days," he said.
North said the faster option—using the state bid—would allow units to be installed in time for the next school year, while following a more time-consuming procurement process could delay delivery and installation. He asked board members to contact him or Dr. Small with questions before the next meeting and said the item will be placed on the upcoming agenda for a formal vote.
Why it matters: HVAC replacement affects classroom comfort and building readiness for the school year. Procurement path and timing can materially alter whether installations occur before students return to school.
