Mayor proclaims Arbor Day as Cranford volunteers tout tree-planting and management work

Mayor Terrence Curran read a proclamation at the April 22 Township Committee meeting designating April 25, 2025, as Arbor Day in Cranford and praised volunteer work to expand and maintain the town’s tree canopy.
Curran said Cranford was recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation as a 2024 Tree City USA and reported that volunteers and staff planted nearly 300 trees last year. He said volunteers planted 40 trees the day of the meeting and the township aims to plant another 85 trees this fall.
Curran and other speakers credited the newly formed Shade Tree Commission and the Environmental Commission for much of the volunteer coordination. Commissioner Curran thanked Shade Tree superintendent Eric Kostrope and commission members Denise Alvarez, Molly, Annette and John for their efforts; the mayor also recommended the commission’s “tree of the month” videos featuring Eric Hastrip and Denise Alvarez.
During public comment, the chair of the Environmental Commission (Ron) announced two weekend events: a battery recycling drop-off and an ARPA Day celebration at Sherman Park.
Committee members also noted the meeting approved a resolution awarding a contract for a tree inventory and forest management plan to a contractor (noted in committee comments as Arbor Pro) and said much of that contract is funded by grants.
