The Township Committee on April 22 approved an ordinance to send a downtown streetscape and potential closure concept to the New Jersey Department of Transportation for review, a procedural step officials said is needed because North Avenue is a state highway.
Commissioner Miller Prunty and Commissioner Andrews described the plan as part of a larger streetscape study aimed at improving pedestrian space, traffic flow and public gathering areas in the downtown. Miller Prunty urged residents to attend public information sessions: planners will host sessions on Tuesday, May 13 at the community center and Sunday, May 18 at the street fair, with additional stakeholder meetings for business and property owners and civic groups.
Mayor Terrence Curran and other committee members stressed that the ordinance does not close Eastman Street or any downtown streets immediately; the measure simply requests NJDOT review and sign-off before the township spends more time and resources on detailed designs.
