James Rose Center seeks $50,000 Bergen County preservation grant to repair windows, doors and staircase

Kevin Rose, associate director of the James Rose Center, told the council he submitted public notice and a request that the council read a resolution informing the community the center is applying for a Bergen County Historic Preservation Trust Fund grant.
Rose said the total package of needed exterior repairs totals about $47,500 for replacement windows, exterior doors and repair of a central staircase leading to the second‑floor garden; the grant is a three‑to‑one match, and the center would provide the 25 percent local match. He said architectural work for a larger restoration of an enclosed second‑floor space (the Zendo) is estimated near $1.5 million and would require a different funding approach.
Council members and residents praised the center as a regional attraction and asked whether the repaired stairwell would reopen upstairs to the public; Rose said most of the second floor has been public in recent years except the Zendo, which remains closed after a tree fell on it years ago. Council members also reminded the public that the center will offer treetop yoga events and volunteer days to support the season’s opening.
The council agreed to read a proclamation at an upcoming public meeting to recognize the center and its work. Rose said the James Rose Center would match the grant and that additional grant applications will follow.
