Council hears a series of capital and equipment awards including tennis/pickleball resurfacing and technology upgrades

Parks and Recreation recommended resurfacing Somerville tennis courts (Sport Tech Acrylics) for $79,000 and renovating Glen pickleball courts for $39,000, both using cooperative purchasing (Sourcewell) and capital funds. Nancy Bigos, Parks & Rec director, told the council courts serve both the public and the Ridgewood High School teams.
Police and public-safety recommendations included a cooperative purchase of access-control and CCTV equipment and services from Open Systems Integrators (OSI) for roughly $194,000, funded from a mix of capital and operating accounts; Lieutenant Chuck presented the request. The police department also declared three patrol vehicles surplus and plans replacement vehicles as part of the operating budget; staff indicated replacement options include more fuel-efficient models.
Public Works and Sanitation asked to convert two rented Freightliner M2 rear-load packer trucks to purchased units at a combined not-to-exceed price of $523,600, pending capital appropriations. Signal/streets staff asked for a new Ford F-250 body replacement at about $24,005.31.
The fire department received a $29,905 Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation grant to buy thermal imaging cameras; staff recommended awarding the equipment purchase to Strategic Safety Dynamics to match the grant amount. Council members expressed support for the various capital maintenance items and asked staff to coordinate timing to minimize service disruptions.
Other smaller professional awards and operating contracts were presented, including a consulting contract for a fair-share and housing-element consultant for $22,500 and authorization of a tax refund for a disabled veteran as noted in the clerk’s memorandum.
