Laramie County proclaims April 2025 Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month

County staff member Miss Heiler presented the proclamation and introduced representatives from child-protection partners, including the sheriff, district attorney Sylvia Hackle, victim advocates Dia Ortiz and Tracy Walton. The proclamation text noted research linking child abuse to later risks including PTSD, depression and low academic achievement and listed local partner organizations: Safe Harbor (a children's justice center), the Laramie County Child Protection Team, the Laramie County Department of Family Services, Cheyenne Police Department, the Laramie County Sheriff's Office, the Laramie County District Attorney's Office, CRMC SANE Nurse Program, CASA of Laramie County, Wyoming Citizen Review Panel, and Parents as Teachers.
The proclamation cited local Safe Harbor activity: "99 children receive child forensic interviews at Safe Harbor," with breakdowns the reading attributed as 42 victims of sexual abuse, 37 of physical abuse, five of neglect, five witnesses of domestic violence, and ten exposed to drug use in the home. Commissioner Thompson and another commissioner praised victims advocates and the Children's Justice Center for their work during the discussion. The commission approved the proclamation by roll call.
