Laramie County names Cheyenne America250 commission to pursue state grants

The Laramie County Board of Commissioners on a voice and roll-call vote designated the Cheyenne America250 Commission as the county’s official America250 commission, a move county staff said will allow the commission to apply for state grants expected to start at roughly $100,000.
County staff said the designation does not require any county appropriation and that the commission plans to pursue private fundraising and state grant requests. A staff presenter noted that the state grant fund is “dwindling rapidly” and that March 10 is the next application deadline.
The presenter also reminded commissioners that the state funds cannot be used for fireworks; the presenter said Cheyenne Frontier Days has agreed to fund the fireworks display as it traditionally does. No public opposition was recorded during the discussion.
Commissioner Heath, Commissioner Thompson, Commissioner Zwonitzer and Chairman Malm voted aye on the motion.
The commission’s action simply designates a local entity to be eligible for state money; commissioners did not appropriate county funds or adopt a project plan during the meeting.
Officials said next steps will be driven by the Cheyenne America250 Commission’s fundraising and grant applications to the state program.
