Trustees debate alternate calendar options; work session scheduled and policy coding advanced

Trustees spent considerable time discussing alternate-calendar options for the district and voted to approve the Cokeville and Star Valley 2025–26 calendars after hearing administrator and teacher-committee input.
Administrators said the calendar committee considered competing priorities including the Wyoming High School Activities Association (WHSAA) practice schedule, staff preferences for more 4-day weeks and family travel patterns around Christmas and spring break. Two calendar proposals were distributed to staff and buildings; one ("Calendar B") drew majority staff support in an internal survey and was the basis for the Star Valley recommendation.
Board members raised several process questions: whether the committee should survey the broader parent community, how to handle building-by-building differences, and the calendar filing deadline with the state. Superintendent Rob Erickson said the state filing deadline had been relaxed and that the district still has time to refine calendars before filing; staff also agreed to host a dedicated calendar work session for trustees and stakeholders.
Trustee Long recorded the only dissent on the Star Valley calendar; the Cokeville calendar passed without recorded opposition. Trustees scheduled a work session for Feb. 18 at 5:00 p.m. to provide more public explanation for calendar tradeoffs and to collect stakeholder questions. The session will be recorded and posted, administrators said.
Separately, the board considered a broad policy audit and first-reading adoption of Section B policies using Wyoming School Boards Association (WSBA) recommended coding. The board approved the Section B first reading and staff will bring a second-reading packet at the next meeting.
Why it matters: calendar structure affects families, transportation, activity practice schedules and staff workload. Directors recommended a recorded work session to better explain the tradeoffs and to collect feedback before any further changes.
What’s next: administrative staff will hold the Feb. 18 work session and collect stakeholder input; policy updates in Section B will return for a second reading at a subsequent board meeting.
