Will County facilities update: Core Annex renovation, veterans assistance build‑out and floodplain buyouts

County facilities staff provided updates on multiple capital projects and building maintenance activities across Will County during the committee meeting.
Bill, a county facilities staff member, reported that design work for Core Annex Level 2 renovation is complete and that construction timing remains to be determined pending the State’s Attorney’s review of contract documents. On the Land Use and Public Defender consolidation, staff said the move from four floors into two is about 50% complete on the third floor and expected to finish within about five weeks. “Design status was complete,” Bill said about the Core Annex renovations.
Work on the Veterans Assistance Commission build‑out at the former Copperfield Building is well under way, staff said: the roof replacement is finished, exterior glazing is nearly complete, and Harbor was named the general contractor for the interior mechanical and electrical build‑out. Staff characterized that project as a quick‑turnaround job with an anticipated start within 30 days and an objective of having the Veterans Assistance Commission into the space before their lease at the current site ends in September or October.
Facilities staff also said the county worked with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to acquire and demolish six homes in a floodplain on the DuPage River in the south end of Plainfield, turning the lots into green space. Photos were not available for the slides but will be provided at the next meeting, staff said.
Other updates: Sunny Hill repurposed and distributed resident beds and mattresses to educational programs and overseas recipients; the Child Advocacy Center is planning a medical evaluation suite to allow on‑site nurse practitioner exams and avoid transport to outside hospitals; the auditor’s office had a new exterior door installed as an emergency exit; and the county conducted a pinwheel event to raise awareness for child abuse victims.
On the old courthouse, staff said the windscreen came down and the county is awaiting reports from two investigative engineering firms (ESI and Wishtani) due by week’s end. Regarding sidewalk repairs by the old courthouse, a low bid was awarded to Torch Construction and work is scheduled to start after the police memorial, with a goal of completion before the first farmers market set‑up.
Staff also reported life‑safety training (AED and CPR) for departments, and that facilities completed roughly 720 work orders in the previous month. Committee members asked staff to circulate more information to board members about county‑sponsored public events and to provide photos and follow‑up details at the next meeting.
