Union representative and WVU Extension highlight veteran apprenticeship and community programs during public comment

During the public-comment portion of the May 8 Hancock County Commission meeting, two speakers urged use of local training and community programs.
David Bland, a representative of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades, distributed informational folders and discussed direct-hire apprenticeship pathways for veterans, saying that when a veteran signs up for an apprenticeship within one year of leaving the military "the federal government makes up their wages, so they literally start out at top pay." Bland described the union's training center in Weston, West Virginia, its trades (painters, drywall finishers, glaziers, hydroblasters and sign/display workers) and outreach initiatives including programs to increase female participation.
Zachary White, representing WVU Extension, thanked the commission for county support of 4-H and Master Gardener programs and invited commissioners and residents to the annual plant sale at Gabe's in Weirton. He also provided dates for 4-H STEM and resident camps, noting camps were beginning to fill.
Both comments were informational; no commission action was taken on the items presented during the public-comment period.
