The Tacoma School District board voted Thursday to approve a three-year Required Action District (RAD) plan for Edna Travis Elementary, formally beginning a school improvement cycle in 2025–26.
Taj Jensen, director of Title I, LAP and Student Support Services, told the board that Edna Travis was recognized by the state for closing opportunity gaps and that the school entered the RAD-required introductory cohort this year. The RIC year is intended for planning: school staff, families and community partners produced a data-driven, community-informed improvement plan for full implementation next year.
Jensen said the school’s planning work, which combined internal and external audits (the state provided an external audit), produced three key priorities: collaboration, systems development and accountability. The board’s approval will allow the district to submit the plan to OSPI and the State Board of Education and begin implementation under the district’s support.
Board members praised school leadership and staff for their work during the planning year. President Schroeder thanked Principal Gibbs and district staff, saying the school’s classrooms already “feel like a magical place” and expressing confidence in the plan while acknowledging the “tough process.” The motion to approve the RAD plan passed with the board’s voice vote.
