District facilities staff reported a series of summer projects and capital improvements at the Clarke County Board of Education meeting on May 8, providing timelines and photographs of work in progress.
Cedar Shoals High School: Staff showed photos of the auto-shop expansion (equipment being installed) and an indoor batting facility (slab poured, structural steel on site). Renovations in the old gym locker rooms included new epoxy flooring and updated interior graphics for several finished spaces. A new ROTC building’s structural steel is in place and will be enclosed and roofed soon.
Gaines Elementary: Architect renderings and a site aerial were shown for a planned classroom expansion. Areas highlighted in red on a rendering indicate additional classroom spaces to be constructed; staff said they expect to return a price in August and aim to begin construction later in the school year.
District warehouse: The district services warehouse slab has been poured and structural steel has been delivered to double warehouse capacity. An additional dock leveler is being added to improve truck unloading capacity.
Operations updates: Plant services staff described an EV bus-charging station that is being supported and recounted a Clean Water Initiative pilot involving internet-connected water-fill stations (a beta test with LK CERN) to monitor water cooler status remotely on the district network.
Roofing and deferred maintenance: Facilities staff said a comprehensive roof condition assessment (a multi‑hundred‑page report) identified immediate needs at several schools. Winterville and Holston were cited as high priorities; Holston’s roof was described as in especially poor condition with potential replacement or full restoration costs approaching the high six figures for a single roof. Staff described three remediation approaches—spot repairs (cheaper short term), full restoration with a long-term warranty, or complete roof replacement—and told the board restoration or replacement will require substantial funding.
Why it matters: Planned renovations and maintenance affect project timelines, safety and the district capital budget. Staff asked the board to consider deferred-maintenance funding to address roofs and other priority needs.
What’s next: Staff will return firm cost estimates as projects progress; Gaines pricing is expected in August. The district will present roofing options and funding needs for board review.
