Elko County Fire Board accepts 2024 end-of-year report; highlights student Fire Tech partnership

The Elko County Fire Board voted to accept the district's 2024 end-of-year report, a 35-page document summarizing operations, accomplishments and challenges for the year.
Chief Matt Peterson told the board the report outlines goals set in the prior year, station-by-station breakdowns, operations, wildland risk reduction and funding sources. He highlighted a partnership with the Elko County School District that began with after-school programming and expanded into a classroom program in Spring Creek.
"We had about 20 students that took our courses and we hired 10 of them as seasonals and so we sent those kids off to school with money in their pocket," Peterson said. He also said the Spring Creek classroom program has about 17 students who will complete certifications such as support firefighter training, wildland incident command classes and first aid/CPR.
Peterson said the primary instructor for the Spring Creek class has been Acting Captain Floyd Davey and that instruction is provided by a mix of full-time staff. He noted the course runs about an hour a day from the start to the end of the school year and that students must be 18 to be employed as wildland firefighters.
The board approved the report by voice vote. The chief said the document was expanded at a commissioner’s request to provide more operational detail.
