NDOT reports mixed traffic trends in Elko County, outlines maintenance and near‑complete construction work

A Nevada Department of Transportation representative gave the commission a broad update on traffic counts, maintenance activity and construction in Elko County and agreed to follow up with additional station data at the commission's request.
Kareem (NDOT) told the commission that most permanent traffic‑count stations in Elko showed decreases in monthly average daily traffic year‑over‑year, with one exception: station 0075270, 0.8 mile north of Crestview Drive, which had an increase. "If you look at the Elko, all the traffic count in that we have in Elko, you'll see the general trend is it's going down," Kareem said, while noting some individual sites and weekday/weekend splits vary.
Commission members asked whether additional count stations—specifically at State Route 227, Twelfth Street and Lomayo (transcript: "Lemoyo") Highway—could be added to the periodic reporting. Kareem said he would ask NDOT's traffic‑count division and follow up with month‑to‑month or 24‑hour counts if the monitors exist. "I can ask our traffic count division ... and if you like, on our next meeting or after this meeting, I can follow‑up and send you that information if that is available on a month to month comparison," he said.
On operations, Kareem described separate Elko West and Elko East maintenance crews and outlined current tasks: mowing shoulders on SR‑221, SR‑229 and US‑93; brooming storm debris on SR‑227 and SR‑228; patching potholes on SR‑225 and SR‑226; removing falling‑rock debris; repairing guardrail and cushion panels on Interstate‑80 between mileposts 260 and 280; bridge‑deck joint repairs at an Elko overpass; sign replacements on SR‑227 from milepost 1 to 20.1; and other local repairs.
Kareem also summarized construction work nearing completion, including cold milling and pavement rehabilitation on interstate segments, chip‑seal projects on SR‑233, and bridge and drainage work on Elko County routes. He warned of constrained budgets next year and said capital‑project prioritization would fall to higher‑level executive decisions. "We have some challenges in house that we are trying to work out," he said.
Commission members asked about a planned roundabout project; Kareem said, to his knowledge, the roundabout is scheduled to proceed and that design discussions considered reducing the speed limit in the segment to 45 mph to improve safety and operations.
NDOT agreed to return with requested count locations and, where possible, level‑of‑service or volume‑to‑capacity information for the board's master‑plan review.
