Elko County GIS corrects address points and urges departments to vet mapping tools before purchase

Andrew Meek, GIS technician with Elko County, told the Enhanced Title 1 Board that since the prior meeting county GIS added 23 address points to the county layer, including several in the City of Wells and for recent City of Carlin and City of Elko annexations.
Meek highlighted persistent inaccuracies in third-party mapping back ends, particularly ZIP-code errors and misnamed road segments visible in Google Maps for rural subdivisions such as Clearwater Estates, JLJ Ranches and River Ranches. He said those errors can affect emergency response and the county's new burn-permit registration system, which currently uses Google as a mapping back end.
"If a person who wants to register the burn permit, their address is not coming up in the address list that Google has, they need to reach out to me," Meek said. He described the workaround used by GIS: sending corrected address data to Google through the county partnership program; turnaround on updates is typically four to six business days.
Meek said he had this morning submitted roughly 90 address points for JLJ Ranches and 21 addresses for Clearwater Estates and that he plans to address River Ranches next. He also described correcting a looping road-label error in Clearwater Estates where a single loop had been labeled as a single road rather than three segments, a problem that could misdirect EMS if residents provide county addresses that resolve differently in consumer map apps.
Meek urged county departments to consult GIS when purchasing any product with a mapping component: "If this program's gonna have a mapping portion and it's not gonna integrate with county records, let's take a look before we go ahead and purchase it," he said, noting that many off-the-shelf mapping solutions do not use up-to-date Elko County records.
Why this matters: inaccurate address, road-name or ZIP-code data in public-facing apps can delay emergency response, complicate permitting and increase staff workload when GIS must perform manual corrections.
The Board received Meek's report as an update; no formal action was taken on the GIS item at the meeting.
