Elko LEPC adopts Great Basin College full‑scale exercise; regional preparedness summit set for May

The Elko County Local Emergency Planning Committee on a voice vote approved adopting Great Basin College’s April 25 full‑scale exercise as the LEPC’s annual exercise and received notices of multiple upcoming training opportunities, including a regional preparedness summit in May.
The adoption motion was made by Lee Cabness, Elko County emergency manager and LEPC chair, and seconded by Dan (Daniel) Hassett, deputy chief EMS and LEPC secretary. The committee voted in favor with no opposition noted.
The vote came amid a broader training update from Amos Holler of the Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health, who announced a “thirteenth annual World Preparedness Summit” scheduled in May and a one‑day Rural Domestic Preparedness Consortium course on disaster recovery for rural communities set for May 13 ahead of the summit. Holler also described a pediatric “Disasters in Seconds” training kit available for first‑responder scenario training.
Holler said the two‑day summit on May 14–15 will be open to local emergency managers, school district representatives, EMS and fire personnel and other partners, and that registration details and any attendee limits for the May 13 training would be released in the summit flyer. He also said planners are discussing a regional earthquake‑focused exercise for 2027 and working to rebuild surge capabilities for mass casualty and hazmat incidents with limited funding.
Committee members also heard that Elko will likely host ICS‑related trainings, and that the Nevada Emergency Management Basic Academy will be held in Carson City in three separate weeks from April through June. The committee was told a trauma symposium with continuing education for EMS and nursing is scheduled for March 8.
The committee chair said adopting the GBC exercise can help LEPC meet annual filing requirements with the state when the exercise is treated as the county’s annual full‑scale exercise.
The committee did not take additional actions on training items beyond the GBC exercise adoption and noted staff will circulate registration and planning details as they become available.
The LEPC’s next regularly scheduled meeting was set for May 8, 2025.
