Forest Service plans Roads End paving, culvert replacement above Boy Scout camp; brief closure expected

Nichols said the parking‑lot paving contract targets a start date after the week of July 4 and allows the contractor 30 days to complete the work; the Forest Service expects to keep trails open during construction and will provide limited parking at the terraces picnic area. “We’re not closing the trail,” Nichols said.
Nichols said disaster relief and other post‑storm funding will pay to replace a culvert above the Boy Scout camp that has reduced the road to one lane. He said the Forest Service is coordinating with Elko County so the county can issue the contract; the Forest Service expects to advertise the work in April with a mid‑September start target. The work will require a temporary full road closure to traffic for a period Nichols estimated “hoping for a week.” Pedestrian access will be allowed while vehicle traffic is stopped.
Nichols also gave project updates for minerals work on forest lands: the South Jarrett exploration program of work is being finalized for this year, and the Big Springs plan of operations has been submitted and likely will trigger an environmental assessment.
The district ranger said the agencies are trying to time the culvert replacement after the busy recreation season but before hunting season to minimize public disruption. No formal actions were taken during Nichols’ report.
