Board approves bighorn, goat, moose and black‑bear recommendations; discusses habitat projects

The Elko County Advisory Board approved the Department of Wildlife’s recommended quotas and minor adjustments for bighorn sheep and mountain goat hunts, supported the department’s moose quotas, and backed the department’s recommendation for 2025 black bear quotas and harvest limits.
NDOW reported strong bighorn survey results in several units and recommended small tag changes for goats: a one‑tag increase in Unit 101’s goat quota and a two‑tag increase in Unit 102, bringing Unit 102’s total goat tags to 16 resident tags and adding a Silver State program tag. Department biologists reported high lamb and kid recruitment and some successful translocations from neighboring states (16 goats received from Utah in a prior effort).
On moose, field staff reported an updated population estimate of roughly 125 moose statewide; both bull moose tags issued in the prior year resulted in legal bull harvests and NDOW recommended maintaining two bull tags.
The CAB also heard project updates from NDOW biologists about habitat and invasive species work in the Sheep Creek and other ranges, including pilot shrub seedling plantings and several thousand acres of herbicide treatments and reseeding intended to improve drought‑tolerant perennial forage and outcompete cheatgrass.
All the above recommendations were approved by motion and voice vote and the board instructed NDOW to include the CAB’s positions in the Commission materials.
