Budget committee backs short-term reclassification for assessor appraiser who has been performing higher duties

The Elko County Budget Committee voted March 12 to recommend that the Board of County Commissioners reclassify an Appraiser 1 to Appraiser 2 and forward the recommendation from the assessor’s office.
Dennis (Assessor) outlined the request, saying the employee “has been doing appraiser 2 work for quite some time now and over a little right a little over 9 months now.” He told the committee the assessor’s office has funds to cover the pay difference for the remainder of the fiscal year and presented estimated costs to the committee.
Dennis provided compensation details: the short-term retroactive cost for the next four months was presented as roughly $815.93 including benefits; for FY2026 the reclassification would raise the position’s total cost by about $6,000. Dennis explained that Appraiser 2 duties include commercial property work, parceling and personal property affidavits; the employee had passed the required personal-property exam and was performing those duties.
Committee members debated timing given the county’s tight revenue outlook. Amanda and others said they preferred to review the item in the budget cycle; others said the employee had already earned the work. The committee ultimately approved a motion to forward the reclassification request to the county commissioners for approval.
